Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a lawyer and was president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize together with Frederik Willem de Klerk. Mandela is widely respected for his persevering struggle against apartheid, and was the first black president of South Africa. The bust was donated in 2005 by South Africa on behalf of Brigitte Mabandla, the South African Minister of Justice and Tukwini, Mandela’s granddaughter.
