Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian politician. He became leader in the Indian struggle for independence. Gandhi was one of the founders of the modern state of India and in favor of active nonviolence as a means of revolution. He also committed himself to reconciliation between Hindus and Muslims in India. He was murdered in 1948 by an extremist Hindu. Today, Gandhi remains an example for people working towards peaceful conflict resolutions.
