Hugo de Groot (1583-1645) is the founder of international law. Known under the name Hugo Grotius, he is the central figure in the history of politics and science of the first half of the 17th century. He gained international fame especially for his studies in the field of national law, the law of nations, philology, the biblical declaration and the historiography. “The wonder of Holland,” the French king Henry IV called Grotius when he was only fifteen years old. To a large extent, the Netherlands owes its reputation as a center of international law to De Groot.
