The new Hague Institute for Global Justice was officially launched on 10 June 2011, during a ceremony in the Hall of Knights (Ridderzaal).

THIGJ is founded to strengthen the scientific infrastructure in the Hague, in the fields of Peace, Justice, Security and Sustainability. The Institute will apply a multidisciplinary approach to the cross cutting issues which are relevant for these international topics, with an open eye for the needs of developing countries. It will develop a work programme on the future of the Global Judiciary (Courts and Tribunals), about peace diplomacy and preventive policies, and about environmental protection, natural resources and sustainability.

The Advisory Board of this institute is composed of several respected individuals, such as former US minister Madelein Allbright, and the Russian minister Ivanov. The Carnegie Foundation has been involved right from the start in this new endeavour together with its colleagues of the Hague Academic Coalition, and may be regarded as one of the founding fathers.

THIGJ will delegate its director to the regular Board of the institution. The Institute for Global Justice is financed by the Netherlands Government for a first period of 5 years. Its first objective is to find an international Dean, a Director, and to staff the institute.

“We hope that THIGJ will over time become a respected think tank in the Hague, which works closely with the Hague based institutions and which stimulates research and policy development”, said Mr Steven van Hoogstraten, general director of the Carnegie Foundation.
