Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914) worked as Alfred Nobel’s secretary at his office in Paris. Despite his deep love for her, she decided to flee with her secret lover to the Caucasus and wrote Lay down your arms! – a novel that would change the world. This book about the impact of war upon family life inspired many people, like Tsar Nicholas II. He took the initiative to set up a peace conference that resulted in the establishment of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, for which the Peace Palace would be built. Bertha von Suttner’s battle for peace, by setting up peace movements and giving pacifistic talks, changed people’s ideas and hearts. So, as Alfred Nobel regretted his invention of dynamite profoundly because of its unintentional use for warfare, it was his close friend Bertha who convinced him to use his legacy to award those who take an important step towards peace. Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905.
