In remembrance of H.E. Judge Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade

The Peace Palace mourns the loss of H.E. Judge Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade who passed away on 29 May 2022.

Judge Cançado Trindade had been a Member of the International Court of Justice since 6 February 2009, and was re-elected in 2018. His term of office was due to expire in February 2027. Before being elected to the Court, Judge Cançado served as President to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and an active academic. Judge Cançado Trindade has served as member of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law since 2004 and was not only a frequent visitor to the Peace Palace Library, but also chaired the Library Committee of the Court. Judge Cançado Trindade has made a major contribution to the development of international law, both as an academic and as a Judge, sharing numerous opinions to the awards of the Court.

Judge Cançado Trindade will be dearly missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and the colleagues at the International Court of Justice.
