The painting in monochrome colors depicts the “Glorification of Peace”: The Goddess of Peace sits on her throne and is surrounded by allegories and virtues. Under her feet can be seen Mars, the god of war. By holding him to the ground, she prevents the war from rising again. The painting is actually a design for a gobelin that was never completed due to the artist’s untimely death.
