In remembrance of H.E. Judge James Richard Crawford

The Peace Palace mourns the loss of H.E. Judge James Richard Crawford who passed away on 31 May 2021. 

Judge Crawford had been a Member of the International Court of Justice since 6 February 2015. His term of office was due to expire in February 2024. Before being elected to the Court, Judge Crawford had been active in numerous cases before the Courts in the Peace Palace. In addition, he had long served as an active member of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law and was a frequent visitor to the Peace Palace Library. Judge Crawford made a major contribution to the development of international law, both as an academic and as a judge. 
 
H.E. Judge James Richard Crawford will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and his colleagues at the International Court of Justice.
