An intergenerational dialogue on climate justice:
The role of the Netherlands in pursuing equitable climate action at the UN

The effects of climate change are increasingly visible and threaten current and future generations. The climate crisis generates and exacerbates human rights concerns for all inhabitants of our planet, whilst disproportionately affecting Indigenous People and rural communities.

Young people from around the world believe that there is a need for urgent climate action, and are turning towards the International Court of Justice to contribute to the progressive development of climate justice. As this year marks the 75th anniversary of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), it is the perfect time to analyse the potential of an ICJ Advisory Opinion on the clarification of state obligations.

This dialogue will discuss the inequities that children, youth and marginalized communities are facing due to the climate crisis, and aims to recognize the powerful role youth play in driving climate ambition. The event will conclude with a discussion on the role of the Netherlands in pursuing equitable climate action at the United Nations, for example by requesting an ICJ Advisory Opinion.
