Dutch Peace Prize awarded to Algerian Brahimi

The Hague, 9. October 2014
Former Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, conflict mediator and UN diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi will receive the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize 2014 on the 27th of November in the Peace Palace. The Carnegie Foundation has awarded this peace prize to Lakhdar Brahimi for his many efforts as an international mediator, supported by his expertise in peace negotiations and reconstruction in conflict zones.

Lakhdar Brahimi
Lakhdar Brahimi (1934) was a special representative for the United Nations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Until May 2014 Brahimi worked as a peace envoy to the UN for Syria. He is a member of The Elders, a think tank of former statesmen who are committed to world peace. Throughout his career but also in his personal life Brahimi has made a strong effort to fight against poverty and injustice and to achieve peace.

Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize
The Carnegie Wateler Peace is awarded every two years to a person or an institution furthering the cause of international peace,” … in whatever way, by word or deed in the form of international action, in literature, or the arts” . The prize is awarded in the Peace Palace, founded with the money of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and derives its name from the Dutch banker Johan Wateler who left a substantial legacy in 1928 to finance a peace prize. The Peace Prize was awarded for the first time in 1931. The Dutch organization War Child received the last Peace Prize in 2012.

Award ceremony
The award will be presented to Dr Lakhdar Brahimi in the Great Hall of Justice of the Peace Palace by Dr Bernard Bot, chairman of the Board of the Carnegie Foundation. The award consists of a certificate and a prize money of 35,000 euros.
