Carnegie institutions worldwide combine forces to tackle peace challenges
From 24 to 26 September 2018, the Peace Palace in The Hague is hosting the first edition of the Carnegie PeaceBuilding Conversations. Leading figures like Luis Almagro (Organization of American States), Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands (Missing Chapter Foundation), Ezekiel Ole Katato (Maasai elder), Ella Robertson (One Young World) and Victor Ochen (African Youth Initiative Network) will set the stage for about twenty dialogue sessions in which more than three hundred professionals working for governments, businesses, NGO’s, philanthropic organizations and knowledge institutions will generate fresh perspectives on peacebuilding and conflict resolutions. It is the first time that Carnegie institutions worldwide are combining forces to tackle peace challenges.
In view of the increasing complexity, urgency and interconnectedness of situations involving conflicts and peace, new perspectives are much needed. The Carnegie PeaceBuilding Conversations will therefore bring together persons from various backgrounds, including those directly affected by conflicts and future generations. Financing peace, Natural Resources, Health, Education, Youth and Cyber Security are some of the main themes that will be addressed.
“If Carnegie were alive today he would be thinking of today’s left out and left behind young people whose talent and potential is being neglected” says Gordon Brown, United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. “He would focus on the 75 million children caught up in conflict zones most of whom are denied schooling. And he would be thinking of the unrealized promise of the Sustainable Development goals that every single child should, by 2030, enjoy primary and secondary education. The question we must ask is what partnership can philanthropy, governments and the international community now enter into to ensure we deliver on that promise of universal primary and secondary education”.
By connecting leading stakeholders from various backgrounds and generations, as well as underrepresented players around conflict related themes, the Carnegie Peacebuilding Conversations aim to generate unexpected insights and routes for progress in promoting world peace. Views are generated through dialogue involving different perspectives: from youth growing up in war zones to business and political leaders who can realise change and drive innovation.
Peace Palace
The Carnegie PeaceBuilding Conversations are an initiative of The Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace and the Carnegie Institutions worldwide and is a cooperation with authoritative organizations as the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, Europol, Major Alliance, Youth Peace Initiative and the United Network of Young Peacebuilders.
Participants in the Carnegie Peacebuilding Conversations will gather in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice, at the Peace Palace. The Peace Palace is the international symbol of peace and houses the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The Carnegie Foundation that owns the Peace Palace, has the aim to use this iconic value as convening power to bring together actors from different backgrounds for dialogues on contemporary issues in peacebuilding, to foster understanding and cooperation, leading to a more peaceful world.
Results
The outcomes of the conversations will be captured in a publication which will be shared with organizations and individuals committed to more inclusive, just and peaceful societies and will function as a starting point for upcoming events at the Peace Palace.
